Hydroponic growing explained: NFT, Dutch bucket and Ebb & Flow systems

What hydroponic growing is

Hydroponics means growing plants in a nutrient solution or inert substrate instead of soil. It is used in greenhouses for lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers and other crops.

Success depends on controlling the nutrient solution, pH and climate, so choose a system according to the crop and the grower's experience.

NFT systems

An NFT system runs a thin film of nutrient solution through channels holding the plant roots. It is often used for leafy vegetables and herbs.

A reliable pump and power supply are essential, because an interruption in circulation quickly affects the plants.

Dutch bucket and Ebb & Flow

A Dutch bucket system uses containers of substrate and is often chosen for larger plants such as tomatoes and cucumbers. Ebb & Flow uses tables that are periodically flooded and drained, and suits seedlings and smaller plants.

Rolling tables can make better use of greenhouse space by reducing the number of aisles needed.
